NDC calls for inauguration of unit committees

Techiman (B/A), May 17, GNA- Mr. Kwame Baah-Wiredu, monitoring and research officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Techiman North and South constituencies, has appealed to the government to inaugurate the unit committees.

He said the government failure to do so would mean it does not recognize the grass root democratic structures. Mr. Baah-Wiredu made the call at a meeting with 40 ward chairmen of the party from the Techiman North and South constituencies at Techiman.

The meeting was aimed at mapping out strategies for the general elections in 2008.

Mr. Baah-Wiredu noted with regret that the unit committees, which were supposed to give meaning to participatory democracy, had been dormant under the NPP government.

He chastised the NPP government for its lack of commitment towards rural governance and admonished them to change. The NDC officer commended the party’s flagbearer, Professor John Evans Atta Mills for his recent donation of 200 million cedis to the victims of the rainstorm disaster in Tamale, saying, it was a demonstration of the leader’s selflessness. Mr. Baah-Wiredu appealed to the beneficiaries not to politicize the gesture, but “as a donation to alleviate their plight”. He said the NDC, if voted into power, would reconstruct new regional hospitals in the three Northern regions to facilitate quality health care delivery for the people.

The monitoring and research officer expressed regret about the state of the market in Techiman, noting that the NPP government had failed to continue with the development of the market, started by the NDC under the agricultural sector investment project. “For the past seven years the government has shown no indication of completing the market project”, he said. Mr. Alhaji Yusuf Nasiru, Techiman South constituency chairman entreated the ward chairmen to work hard to enable the party to regain power in 2008.
