Two cable thieves jailed 14 years

Akyem Swedru, May 5, GNA – The Akyem Swedru Circuit Court last Friday sentenced two men who stole electric cables valued at 25 million cedis to a total of 14 years imprisonment in hard labour. Kwasi Kumi, 19, and George Amoh Mensah, 22, both unemployed, were convicted on their own plea.

Police Chief Inspector Ben Osei Kwadwo told the court that on April 17 a man who was seeing his girl friend off at Atutumirem junction near Akyem Achiase spotted some people packing electric cables into sacks. They went back to Atutumirem and informed the inhabitants of their discovery.

When they got there the group spotted Kumi and Mensah and two others now at large boarding a mini bus with three sacks of electric cables.

When the group shouted “thieves” the driver drove off leaving behind the thieves. Kumi and Mensah were arrested.
