Student sentenced 3 years for stealing mobile phone

Juaso, (Ash), April 28, GNA – A 22-year-old student, Kelvin Tay has been sentenced to three years imprisonment in hard labour by the Juaso circuit court for stealing a mobile phone worth 600,000 cedis. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his own plea. Police Chief Inspector Joseph Damanka, prosecuting told the court, presided over by Mr Jacob Boon that, the complainant, Kofi Amoako was a carpenter whereas the accused was a student, all of whom lived at Agogo. He said in February this year, the complainant visited his friend, one Charles who owns a shop at Agogo and left his Sony Ericson mobile phone in the shop when leaving.

The prosecutor said a few minutes later the complainant returned to the shop after realising he had left the phone behind just as his friend who had also left the shop for a while had also returned. Chief Inspector Damanka said they both searched the shop thoroughly but could not find the phone after which, they confronted the accused who was sitting nearby but he denied seeing the phone. He said the complainant then alerted a couple of Areeba unit transfer operators to be on the look-out in case his number was used to purchase units.

The prosecutor said the move yielded result as on April 13, this year one of the unit transfer operators informed the complainant that the accused had used his number to purchase units, and the case was reporting to the police who arrested him.
