Accra, Ghana (PANA) – Ghana on Friday flew relief items worth over 100,000 dollars to victims of the catastrophic floods in Mozambique.
The items included 300 bags of rice, 300 bags of maize, 30 bales of used clothing and 1,000 blankets.
A five-member delegation led by member of Parliament, Commodore Steve Obimpeh, accompanied the items which were flown on board a chartered cargo aircraft. He is also carrying a message from President Jerry Rawlings to President Joachim Chissano.
The minister of Foreign Affairs, Victor Gbeho, described the donation as “an expression of solidarity from the people and government of Ghana to their brothers and sisters in Mozambique in their moments of pain and sorrow.”
He said the government is concerned that such a calamity should strike at a time when developing countries need to commit their energies and resources to nation building and development.
Gbeho noted that the floods have not only resulted in an immense loss of life and property but also caused massive destruction to the economy and infrastructure that would require a huge injection of external support to rehabilitate.
The foreign minister appealed to other nations to extend humanitarian assistance to the people of Mozambique.
