Kufuor leaves for UK

Accra, March 12, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor left Accra on Monday for the United Kingdoms three-day state visit.

The visit, at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II, is the first state visit to be undertaken by a Ghanaian head of state at the requirement of the British monarchy since 1957.

Mr Andrew Awuni, presidential spokesperson, told journalist earlier that highlights of the visit would be bilateral talks between British Prime Minister Tony Blair and President Kufuor.

The British opposition leader and other British politicians would also pay courtesy calls on President Kufuor.

The President would also hold a breakfast meeting with African heads of missions in London and deliver a major policy statement at the Royal Institute of International Affairs.

The Liverpool John Moores University would also honour President Kufuor, while he would also address a rally of the Ghanaian Community in London as part of activities making the Golden Jubilee celebrations. President Kufour is expected to be away for a week. At the airport to see him off were ministers of state and senior Government officials.
