Motorola Wins $41.5 Million Contract to Deploy GSM Digital Cellular System in Ghana

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan. 20, 2000–Ghana Telecommunication Company Ltd (GT) has awarded a $41.5 million contract to Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) for the supply and deployment of its global system for mobile communications (GSM) digital cellular network.

Motorola’s Network Solutions Sector (NSS) will deploy its latest GSM infrastructure at 900 MHz to provide a system capacity for up to 70,000 cellular subscribers. The equipment will be deployed to provide capacity and coverage in the major cities and along major roadways. Countrywide coverage is planned for 2001.

“The demand for GSM service is growing and subscribers expect ever more sophisticated features and services,” said Adnan Rofiee, GT managing director. This system will enable GT to provide higher quality levels of voice services for its customers, and it will allow GT subscribers to receive all their telephone services (regular and mobile phones, local and international connections) from the same telephone company.

“We are happy and proud to benefit from GT’s continued confidence. This contract to deploy a digital cellular network in Ghana strengthens the relationship between GT and Motorola”, said Eugene O’Rourke, Motorola vice president and general manager of NSS Middle East and Africa. “We will ensure that the network is of optimum quality to enable Ghana Telecom to provide the best service to its customers, now and in the future,” said O’Rourke.

Motorola has worked with Ghana Telecom since 1995, when Motorola’s WiLL(R) wireless local loop system was implemented in Ghana.

To date, Motorola NSS has been awarded contracts to supply cellular infrastructure equipment in 16 African countries and has been awarded more than 90 GSM contracts in 40 countries around the world.

Motorola is a global leader in providing integrated communications solutions and embedded electronics solutions. Sales in 1999 were $30.9 billion.
