Fulani herdsmen invade Nkwanta district

Nkwanta, Jan. 26, GNA-A large number of Fulani herdsmen have since last December been streaming into the Nkwanta district from Togo with an estimated 4,000 herds of cattle as well as donkeys and sheep.

The Fulani herdsmen, said to be settling down at Kabiti and Kpassa were said to be wild and aggressive and have on occasions threatened to attack farmers, who dared protest against the destruction of farms by their animals.

Police sources in Nkwanta, who encountered the Fulanis told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the herdsmen seemed to be aided by agents who conducted reconnaissance of the areas they intended to move into. Information indicated that on entering the Nkwanta district in December last year the Fulanis said they were in transit to the Northern Region. Mr. Agbodzi Claude, a driver of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), said he encountered the Fulani herdsmen at about 0400 hours on December 22 last year moving towards Nkwanta from Brewniase.

He said he was gripped with fear on seeing that large number of herdsmen and their families and animals moving with torches in the middle of the road.

Meanwhile the Nkwanta District Security Council (DISEC) led by the District Chief Executive, Mr Joseph Denteh met with the Fulanis and gave them up to Wednesday January 24, this year to vacate the district. They were also made to pay 6,740,000.00 cedis being the value of food crops destroyed by their animals. 25 Jan. 07
