Woman arrested over fire outbreak

Asikasu Number Two (B/A), Jan 11, GNA – Police at Dormaa Ahenkro have placed in custody a 40-year-old woman who allegedly set fire that destroyed 24 acres of cocoa farms at Issakakrom, near Asikasu Number Two on Tuesday.

Ajara Ali, who had her cocoa farm destroyed, was alleged to have started the fire the previous day on her farm. Mr. Nicholas Oppong-Yeboah, Dormaa District Fire Officer, told the Wednesday that several cocoa farms were on fire at Asikasu No 2. He said a joint team of members of the district anti-bushfire committee and fire service personnel rushed to the scene to find the three farms, as well as a vast stretch of the forest, was destroyed by the fire.

“Immediate investigations revealed that Ajara Ali had burnt some debris on her farm the previous day and the embers had caused the fire outbreak.”

He deplored the increasing reluctance of people in the district to volunteer information on persons who engaged in arson and other criminal activities and warned relatives of criminals to desist from seeking favours from security agents but to allow offenders to face the law. This way, he said, the law would be made to take its course to deter prospective criminals. The police at Dormaa Ahenkro confirmed the arrest of Ajara Ali and said she would soon be put before court.
