Garu (U/E), Dec. 29, GNA – Some 220 persons pursuing courses in the health and education sectors have benefited from over 440 million cedis sponsorship package by the Garu-Tempane District Assembly. Beneficiaries included disabled students, nurse and teacher trainees as well as needy brilliant students in first and second and tertiary institutions. In addition, two Early Childhood Development centres and three 3-unit classroom blocks are at advanced stages of completion as well as the rehabilitation of some schools and teachers’ quarters. The assembly also provided nurses’ quarters in eight communities and is building a doctor’s bungalow at Garu as part of efforts to upgrade the Garu Health Centre into a District Hospital.
Mr. Emmanuel Sin-nyet Asigri, the District Chief Executive, said this in his annual report at the first ordinary session of the assembly at Garu. He said 800 million cedis Canadian grant under the District Wide Assistance Project (DWAP) would be used to construct a three-unit classroom block at Bugri and nurses’ quarters at Denugu in 2007.
Mr Asigri said the massive investment in personnel and in infrastructure was to attract and retain to strengthen the human base of the new district. He said four dams have been rehabilitated for all-year farming and irrigation facilities have been provided along the White Volta and called on assembly members to encourage people to use the facilities. He commended the past assembly members for their efforts that ensured that all projects were executed.
