GCAA apologises for power outage

Accra, Dec. 19, GNA – The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has apologized for the inconvenience caused to arriving passengers as well as agencies operating at the immigration and arrival halls following the power outage that occurred on Monday.

The GCAA said a number of measures have been put in place to prevent such as an incident from ever occurring again at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

A statement signed by Mr. Eric Noi, the Public Affairs Manager of GCAA, said the measures include the installation of uninterrupted power supply at the immigration and baggage reclaim halls.

There is also interconnection of the two main sub-stations at the KIA, such that either sub-station could supply the entire airport with power when needed.

At 1650 hours on December 18, the main out-going circuit braker feeding GCAA headquarters building and the immigration and arrival halls at the KIA tripped, causing temporary darkness in certain parts of the airport, including the immigration and baggage reclaim halls. The immigration as well as baggage reclaim procedures was done manually.

The fault, which was rectified at 2105 hours, did not affect the departure terminal including the check-in hall and departure immigration.

The runway lighting system was also operational during the period. Flight arrivals and departures were thus not disrupted.
