Kwanyaku (C/R), Dec. 13, GNA 96 The 21,000 cubic-metre-capacity daily Kwanyaku Water Treatment Plant that would supply water to Agona, Gomoa, Mfanatsiman, Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam and Awutu-Efutu-Senya Districts would be inaugurated in January 2007, six months ahead of schedule. Denys Engineers and Contractors B.V. of Netherlands began the project in January 2005. It was scheduled for completion in June 2007. This came to light when the Minister of Water Resources; Works and Housing, Mr Hackman Owusu Agyemang inspected the Plant following speculations that the project had been delayed. The Netherlands Government is funding the 24 million Euros project with a 50 per cent grant component and a loan from ORET, a bank in that country.
Mr Owusu-Agyeman expressed satisfaction at the work done and said the same Contractor would undertake the Koforidua Water Project. He said the treated water was of higher quality than the standard required by the Ghana Standards Board and noted that surrounding the villages and towns of Kwanyaku would be the prime beneficiaries. Mr Owusu-Agyeman commended The Netherlands’ support to the country and said it was the only Government that assisted the Ghana Government to improve urban water supply.
Mr Gerald Samuel Odartei Lamptey, Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company, said the old plant, which had a capacity of 14,000 cubic-metres per day and currently operated below capacity, would be rehabilitated to increase the overall capacity to 35,000 cubic-metres of water per day.
He said the total plant output of 35,000 cubic-metres per day would meet the projected demand of a population of 750,000 in 2020.
