Kaira (V/R), Nov. 6, GNA – Mr. Seth Otoo, Regent of Kaira in the South Dayi District, has appealed to the Volta Regional Minister to make good his promise to set up a committee to investigate the conflict among settler communities in the Tongor-Kaira area. “We should not wait until precious lives are lost before a committee is formed”, he said.
Mr Otoo made the appeal at a victory thanksgiving service organized by Mr. John B.K. Ahorsu, who was re-elected as Assemblyman for the Tongor-Kaira Electoral Area.
Mr Otoo said his appeal was to remind the Regional Minister that the conflict situation to which he drew his attention when he last visited the area still existed.
Mr Ahorsu alleged that the Volta River Authority had neglected the people after resettling them following the construction of the Akosombo hydro electricity dam.
“Nothing has been done to help these people to regain their lost glory economically, socially and culturally. It is not fair to deprive the people of their livelihood for the sake of mother Ghana and leave them in abject poverty”, he said.
He appealed to the government to develop the area and also pay compensations for lands taken from them in the early sixties. Mr Ahorsu called on the people in the area to facilitate a peaceful atmosphere for development and expressed the hope that settler communities would eschew sectionalism. He advised the people to form co-operative groups to enable them have access to the numerous interventions put in place by the government to reduce poverty.
Delivering the sermon on the theme “the relationship between the leader and the people”, Elder Emmanuel Fenuku-Mensah of the Church of Pentecost said leaders should see themselves as servants and that the people must respect those in authority. 06 Nov 06
