Court remands two men for poultry theft

Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/A), Oct. 21, GNA 96 The Dormaa District Circuit Court has remanded two employees of a poultry farm for stealing 600 fowls valued at 19.2 million cedis. Yaw Mensah, a night watchman and Kwadwo Isaac, a farm-hand, both pleaded guilty to stealing and would re-appear before the court on November 2, 2006.

Presenting the facts of the case to the court, presided over by Mr. Justice Vincent Carl Senu, Police Chief Inspector Matthew Yeboah, said the accused persons were employees of Kusi Poultry Farms, located on the Dormaa-Berekum trunk road. He said in August this year, the farm owner detected a drastic reduction in the number of his birds and therefore began a search for them.

Chief Inspector Yeboah said the suspects feigned innocence and offered their master all the necessary support in his search until October 10, when the owner detected two big holes on the ceiling of the coop.

The court heard that persistent threats by the farm owner led the suspects into accepting responsibility for the theft with Isaac insisting that he took only 20 of the birds which he had shared equally with Yaw Mensah.

The Prosecutor said the two also consented to puncturing the holes on the ceiling through which they entered the coop and stole the fowls at night. The Judge reminded the suspects that they shall refund the cost of the birds, irrespective of the judgement, which he intends to pronounce on their next appearance. 21 Oct. 06
