Cape Coast, Oct 11, GNA- The Central Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) on Tuesday, began selling 500 full pieces of assorted imported wax prints seized from smugglers and allocated to the council, to its staff and people trading within the premises of the council.
The cloths, which sell on the market at 100,000 cedis per half-piece, were sold to the public at 40,000 cedis per half piece. The Regional Minister, Nana Ato Arthur, said the cloths were part of a consignments seized by customs officials over from smugglers who used unapproved routes to avoid paying customs duties.
He explained that the government therefore directed that the seized cloths be sold to the general public, adding that all the 138 metropolitan, municipal and district administrations have each been given a similar number to sell to the public. He said all the consignments for the region, would be sold simultaneously throughout the districts on Wednesday at the various market places.
Nana Arthur said this action was to serve as a warning to smugglers along the country’s borders to dissuade them from engaging in such “nefarious acts”.
