“The NPP government seems incapable of seeing the wood through the trees on the rule of law and legal matters in our country today”. These were the words of the Chairman of the Convention People’s Party – CPP (UK & Ireland), Nii Armah Akomfrah over the weekend. Mr. Akomfrah was being interviewed on AFRIC Radio – a Ghanaian Radio station in London.
The CPP branch Chairman went on to say “muddle seems to be the order of the day when it comes to legal matters with the NPP government because on most of the big issues of law in recent times they have simply not been up to the task, people commit offences and simply walk away without prosecution”. “When is the government going to show strong leadership on the rule of law, with clear direction on these issues? The examples of weakness and/or incompetence are now too numerous to count, from Bambagate to Essekugate, offences seem to be overlooked, conveniently or simply ignored.”
Mr. Akomfrah said later that as far as the CPP was concerned numerous issues on the recent Anane case and the missing Cocaine saga remain, which the Government must address:
• Minister Anane should have resigned long ago or sacked when as Health Minister in charge of our public health and specifically Aids/HIV prevention had unprotected sex with the very person who was seeking to help devise strategies to help with AIDS/HIV prevention in Ghana.
• Minister Anane’s resignation is seemingly being viewed by Government as the end of the issue over his conduct and actions.
• Enormous public resources have been spent investigating the Minister and following the outcome the Attorney General should be telling the nation what laws have been broken and the charges his department will be bringing against the Dishonorable Minister.
• On the Cocaine saga there is controversy over how the Georgina Wood Committee was established.
• There is controversy o ver the arrest of the Drug Barons which could possibly jeopardize their conviction.
• The Government has dithered on the outcome of the Wood Committee and even now continues to send out conflicting signals on what it intends to do, with the Attorney General once again failing to tell the nation what laws have been broken and the charges his department will be bringing against all the parties noted by the Committee.
• Much media time has been wasted in Government Press conferences which fail to address the issues involved.
The nation deserves better from the apostles of the “rule of law” who far from demonstrating belief and commitment have repeatedly and continuously shown weakness on legal issues and the rule of law, leaving a catalogue of confusion and excuses.
