Kumasi, Oct 6, GNA – Madam Patricia Appiagyei, the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, on Thursday launched a tricycle waste collection concept at Tanoso in the Kumasi Metropolis. The concept to be executed by Zoomlion Limited, a Waste Management Company in Accra, seeks to ensure effective collection of waste from communities, especially in high-density but low-income areas where large and heavy waste collection trucks cannot have access. Launching it, the Metropolitan Chief Executive said the technology was technically simple, cheaper than mechanised power and has brought employment to some of the youth in the country. She said waste disposal had been the concern of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and for that matter the government and it was in the light of this that it had adopted a lot of measures to get this problem solved.
She said there was the need for all to support this tricycle concept.
Mr Stephen Gyekye-Darko, Operations supervisor of Zoomlion, said the project ensured not only public and environmental health but it also enhanced regular and maximum evacuation of waste, thereby reducing indiscriminate disposal of waste in drains and open spaces. He said since the project was on pilot basis, the company had started with 25 tricycles which would be followed with additional 25 in the near future.
Nana Adu-Gyamfi, Tiprehene of Tanoso, called on the people to be vigilant with the equipment to ensure their proper use and safety so that the project could be sustained and extended to other parts of the metropolis.
Mr Kwame Ofori, an artist in Kumasi presented 150 metal dustbins worth 60 million cedis to KMA in support of the project.
