EC attributes voter apathy to attitude of candidates

Accra, Sept. 26, GNA – The Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday attributed the low voter turnout at the District and Unit Level Elections to campaign method of aspiring candidates.

“Where the candidates adopted vigorous, house-to-house participatory and interactive campaign especially within the electoral area, the electorate showed keen interest in the electoral process,=94 Mr Mohammed Addokwei, Greater Accra Regional Director of EC, told the Ghana News Agency after a tour of the some polling stations. “But where the candidates were unexciting, the electorate responded poorly even during the mounting of common platform, which eventually reflected in the low voter turnout in most metropolitan areas,” he said. Mr Addokwei cited other factors as ineffective publicity, general voter fatigue especially in local government elections and other social challenges of the electorate.

Mr Godfred Mortty, a Polling Official, attributed the poor patronage to lack of civic awareness and understanding of the role of district assembly members.

He urged the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment to intensify public education on the role of the district assembly in the current political dispensation.

Mr Mortty also called on the National Commission for Civic Education; Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA); Centre for Democratic Development – Ghana and other political stakeholders to actively participate in local government elections. final declaration of results.
