St. Francis old students hold fund raising dinner

Bolgatanga (Upper East) 8th Sept. ’99 – The Bolgatanga branch of the St. Francis Girls Secondary School Old Students Association at the weekend raised 2.3 million cedis at a fund raising dinner to help rehabilitate the school’s infrastructure.

Facilities that need to be rehabilitated include the school’s dining hall, classrooms and library, as well as the purchase of a new typewriter to replace an old one, which is now out of use.

Giving a brief history of the school, which was founded by His Lordship F. B. Dery, a Roman Catholic Bishop in 1959 with 14 pupils, a member of the association, Miss Elizabeth Fatchu, who is also a pioneer student, recalled that the school started as a middle and primary school but was later moved to its present site in 1963. Those days, she said students were allowed to speak only English, Latin and French languages in the school. In a welcoming address, the President of the association Madam Rose Bacheyie said though the school had produced many responsible people they do little to support it.
