Farmer jailed for stealing 50 tubers of yam

Kumawu-Ashanti, Sept. 06, GNA 96 A Kumawu Circuit court has sentenced Kwabena Salifu 25, a farmer to 12 months imprisonment on his own plea for stealing 50 tubers of yam valued at 500,000 cedis at Drobonso near Kumawu.

Akosua Yankyera 28, a trader was fined one million cedis on her own plea for dishonestly receiving or in default serve six-months imprisonment.

Police Chief Inspector Anthony Godfred Sakyi told the court, presided over by Mr Justice Frank Owusu-Afriyie that in July this year, the supervisor of Palm Acres Farms Limited detected the theft of 50 tubers of yam at the farms.

He said upon a tip-off, Salifu, a former worker of the farms was arrested by the police and during interrogation admitted stealing the yams and selling them to Yankyera for 235,000 cedis and charged with the offence after investigations.
