Cape Coast, Aug. 30, GNA – The Cape Coast Municipal Assembly was dissolved formerly on Wednesday after its fourth and last ordinary session in Cape Coast to end its four-year term.
The Acting Municipal Chief Executive, Nana Ato Arthur, commended the 62-member assembly for its hard work and dedication but expressed concern that although the concept was supposed to be non-partisan, the members were rather polarized into NPP and NDC. This, he said, did not augur well for the progress of the municipality, adding that much would have been achieved if they had worked as a unified body.
He said the assemblies were mandated to ensure the overall development of their districts or municipalities and urged incoming members to eschew any negative tendencies that would derail the purpose of the local government system.
He enumerated some of the achievements of the assembly, saying they included improved road network and drainage system valued at 6.7 billion cedis. It also provided health and education facilities, as well as energy resources in the various communities.
Nana Arthur was unhappy that out of about 942 million cedis poverty alleviation fund disbursed only 212.2 million cedis had been recovered and urged defaulting beneficiaries to repay the money. He said the Assembly collected 67 percent of its estimated revenue as at July. 30 Aug. 06
