Diamond winner fined one million cedis for assault

Akyem Oda, Aug 03, GNA – An Akyem Oda Magistrate court on Thursday convicted Yayera Bonuedi, a 30-year-old diamond winner, to a fine of one million cedis for assaulting his creditor.

Bonuedi, who was convicted on his own plea, would go to jail for nine months in hard labour in default of payment.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Ben Osei Kwadwo told the court presided over by Mr Edward Kwame Bosompem Apenkwah that the complainant resides at Akyem Oda while the convict who is a diamond winner resides at Apoli Zevor in the Birim South District.

He said last year, Bonuedi borrowed 200,000 cedis from the complainant to be used in pumping water from his diamond pit. Police Chief Inspector Kwadwo said Bonuedi failed to pay back until October 29 last year when the complainant saw him at Apoli Zevor and demanded the refund of her money.

Bonuedi became offended and brutally assaulted the complainant and tore her dress valued at one hundred thousand cedis into pieces. A report was later made to the police and the convict was arrested to assist investigations. The prosecution said after Bonuedi was granted bail, he failed to report to the police and he was re-arrested by his surety and handed over to the police.
