Government begins irrigation project at Asankran-Moseaso.

Asankran-Moseaso (W/R), July 30, GNA – The Government is providing a 5.4 Billion-Cedi irrigation project to support vegetable farmers at Asankran-Moseaso in the Wassa Amenfi West District of the Western Region.

It would involve the construction of canals from River Tano where water would be pumped to irrigate hundreds of hectares of vegetable farms in the area.

Mr. Alberto Terkyi, District Chief Executive (DCE), on Friday met vegetable farmers at Asankran-Moseaso to discuss progress of work and some of the benefits the farmers would derive when the project was completed.

He said the contract had been awarded and work was scheduled for completion within 18 months.

Mr. Terkyi commended the Government for the project and said it would enhance income generation and poverty reduction programmes. He urged the farmers to adopt modern farming methods to achieve high yields.

He said the government would continue to adopt programmes to improve agriculture on a sustainable basis.

Mr. Roland Sintim, Deputy Director, Irrigation Development Authority and Mr. Beneditus Abgeko an agriculturist attended the meeting. 30 Jul 06
