Choked river course poses health hazard

Anyinasuso (Ash), July 26, GNA – A choked culvert at the Anyinasuso section of the Tepa-Mankranso trunk road in the Ahafo-Ano South district has rendered the road impassable to commuters and is also posing a serious health hazard to the community.

The culvert constructed as the course for River Woromso or Agyewofrituwa, has been silted creating a big pond about a half kilometre by the roadside, gradually submerging the road. Nana Boakye Asubonteng, Krontihene of Anyinasuso, who took the He has therefore, called on the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) and P&W Ghanem; the contractors which worked on the culvert to, as a matter of urgency dredge it and drain off the water.

Nana Asubonteng said another dicey situation was the seepage of the trapped water into a nearby borehole, which is a source of drinking water for the people.

He said the overflow has also destroyed nearby cocoa, oil palm, foodstuff and vegetable farms.

Miss Elizabeth Appiah, midwife in-charge of the Anyinasuso health centre, also reiterated the call for immediate action to rectify the situation since staff and patients of the facility were frequently being attacked by dangerous reptiles “the stagnant water standing in the ponds is also breeding mosquitoes”.

When contacted, Nana Eric Agyemang Prempeh, the District Chief Executive, said the assembly had earlier on engaged the services of the district Fire Service to desilt the culvert but they were not successful since they lacked the requisite equipment.

He said he had already contacted the consultant of the road who has given assurance to rectify the situation promptly.
