Illegal miners invade Nanankor in WR

Wassa Akropong (W/R), July 18, GNA – Operators of illegal mining popularly known as galamsey have invaded Nanankor, a farming community in the Wassa Amenfi East District, Mr Peter Kwesi Opong, assemblyman for the area, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Monday. He said the miners have blocked roads leading to the town and have dug deep holes in the roads that could be death traps at night. Mr Opong said attempts to stop them from further degrading the environment have proved futile and that they claimed they had permit from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Minerals Commission. He appealed to the police and the district assembly to come to the aid of the community.
