Accra, July 7, GNA- The National Association of Beauticians and Hairdressers, (NABH) Ghana on Friday said the influx of fake hair products on the market was causing harm to their clients and was gradually collapsing the business.
Mrs Joyce Lamptey, National Vice President of the Association who was speaking at a press conference in Accra therefore called on the appropriate authorities to take immediate steps to check the importation and sale of such products.
“The association that depends on quality hair products is facing a major constraint due to the influx of the products, especially its harmful effect on the clients”, she added. Mrs Lamptey said most of the clients had turned to plaiting due to the bad hair products that had resulted in the burning of the scalp of many and in some cases baldness.
“While we agree that free market is good for the growth of the economy, we vehemently oppose the assertion that end users have the choice to identify genuine products and leave the manufacturers of bad ones to go out of business when they realised that their products are not patronised”, she added. “We fail to note the initial harm these products may cause before they are found”.
Mrs Lamptey stressed the need for the enforcement of the law on standardisation and application of stringent immigration measures to rid the bad hair products off the market adding “if nothing is done most of the professionals will be out of work”. She indicated that to many businessmen trade liberalisation meant the licence to deal in anything at all not taking the consequences and efficacy into consideration.
“The problem is not with beauticians only, garages have to deal with fake motor spare parts resulting in accidents, chemical sellers dispensing killer drugs and cloth sellers competing with inferior fabrics”, she said.
