Market women/youth clash with District Assembly

Kasseh, June 26, GNA — Market women and the youth at Kasseh in the Dangme East District have clashed with officials of the Dangme East District Assembly over erection of containers at the Old Kasseh market. The timely arrival of the Chief Executive, Mr Israel Narh Baako who ordered that the containers be relocated, cooled tempers.

Madam Amalia Taylor, who acted as a spokeswoman for the angry group, told the GNA that about six years ago the assembly ejected them from the Old Kasseh market to renovate and construct stalls/sheds for them with the promise that they would go back in six months.

However, to their surprise the market had not been renovated rather some old containers were brought and that they did not know who were behind it.

She said the assembly was insensitive to their plight because it has failed to respond to their plea for the installation of vital facilities to promote their business.

Madam Taylor said they were faced with lack of facilities to store their wares thus compelling them to transport them home daily coupled with the deplorable roads, frequent thefts of their wares as well as the high fares charged by both drivers and truck pushers. The women and the youth called for the setting up of a committee to investigate and find solutions to problems at the market as this was not the first time violence had broken out in the market over similar issues.
