Court remands tailor for defrauding

Akyem Swedru (E/R), June 8, GNA – Abdulai Mukaila, a tailor, resident in Italy was on Thursday remanded into police custody to re-appear on June 12 by the Akyem Swedru Circuit Court on a charge of defrauding by false pretence.

Mukaila, whose plea was not taken was said to have obtained 3130 Euros from one Moutakilou, money he was to deliver to Taaju Abdu Rahman at Akyem Swedru but failed to do so. Prosecuting, Police Inspector Charles N. Quaye told the court presided over by Mr Edward Kwame Bosompem Apenkwah that, the complainant’s uncle; Moutakilou Saliou, also resident in Italy is a friend to the accused.

He said on February 15, Mukaila informed Saliou that he was going back to Ghana and needed 3130 Euros to enable him pay his freight charges.

Saliou agreed and went into an agreement with Mukaila that after clearing the goods in Ghana he should give the money or its cedi equivalent to the complainant and his brother, Hacki Rahim both resident at Akyem Swedru.

The prosecution said Mukaila arrived in the country and evaded the complainant and his brother after the clearing and sale of the goods and went into hiding.

The complainant’s uncle faxed a letter from Italy authorising the complainant to cause the arrest of Mukaila. Inspector Quaye said the complainant therefore, made a case at the Akyem Oda Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and Mukaila was arrested at Atiakama Nkwanta in the Birim South District of the Eastern Region.

During investigations the accused admitted having taken the amount from the complainant’s uncle and pleaded for a grace period to refund it. He was therefore charged before the court.
