Ghanaians to take cues from parts of Africa to fight HIV/AIDS

Ho, May 24, GNA – Mr Delali Ndor, Volta Regional Secretary of the Ghana HIV/AIDS Network (GHANET) on Tuesday said hindsight of the devastation HIV/AIDS had brought to some Eastern and Southern African countries should propel Ghanaians to boldly tackle the pandemic to drastically bring down the infection rate.

He was addressing an HIV/AIDS Awareness durbar organized by DOBECK Enterprises Limited, a construction firm for its workers on the Ho Housing Bridge and residents of its environs. He said posterity would not forgive the current generation, if they realized that with all the examples of the damage HIV/AIDS could do to a society, their forebears allowed a preventable disease ravage the country.

Mr Ndor criticized the notion among the youth that you were dull, backward and stupid, if you did no strive to half sex while a teenager. Mr Bernnet Kwaku Dogbe, Managing Director of the company said the programme was to meet policy directives that HIV/AIDS programmes for workers and residents of communities of projects be a component in all contracts awarded, as a way of increasing awareness on the disease. He said cost of the programmes were to be paid back to the contractors on completion of the projects.

Mr Dogbe said HIV/AIDS was a big threat to the artisans and other workers, who work on contracts, giving the fact that they often left their families to stay at project sites for long periods. Some staff of the Department of Urban Roads in Ho, supervisors of the contract, health officials and members of the housing community attended the programme. 24 May 06
