Farmer jailed for 24 months for assaulting wife

Begoro (E/R), May 13, GNA – A 22-year-old farmer, Kwame Alorwu has been sentenced to 24 months imprisonment in hard labour by the Begoro District Magistrate Court for assaulting his wife, when she threatened to divorce him. He was sentenced on his own plea.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector William Kwasi Nkrumah told the court presided over by Mr Robert Djan that the accused always subjected the wife, Janet Manku to severe beatings, whenever she threaten to divorce him.

He said this made the wife to always escape from the matrimonial home to stay with the parents but upon persistent pleas by the accuse, the in-laws would release the wife back to her matrimonial home. Chief Inspector Nkrumah said on April 4, this year, at night, the couple were on bed and without any provocation the accused pounced on the wife and stabbed her mercilessly.

He said the wife raised an alarm, which attracted a mob to the scene and saved her.

Chief Inspector Nkrumah said the accused then took to his heels but was later apprehended by the mob and escorted to the police. He said the wife was taken to the Begoro Hospital, where she was treated and discharged.
