Court grants bail to nine suspects

Nkawie (Ash), May 07, GNA – The Nkawie circuit court has granted bail to nine suspects from Ntensere near Akropong in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District who are standing trial for allegedly causing harm, unlawful entry and threat of death. Six of the suspects were granted 20 million cedis bail each and bonded over for one year.

Three others, were, however, granted bail in the sum of 40 million cedis each and were also bonded over for one year. They have all pleaded not guilty and will re-appear on May 22. Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Robert Yitamkey said Mr Thomas Ofori-Donkor, the Atwima-Nwabiagya District Chief Executive, paid a visit to the town in March and during interaction with the unit committee and elders of the town, his attention was drawn to the behaviour of the youth who had persistently been indulging in gambling and smoking of Indian hemp.

He impressed upon the unit committee to monitor the activities of the suspects.

The suspects set upon a cassava farm belonging to Kwadwo Boateng, chairman of the unit committee, and destroyed it. The prosecution said still not satisfied, the youth moved to the house of Boateng and threw stones and other missiles ordering him to come out but he went into hiding.

Unable to lay hands on the unit committee chairman, the suspects pursued the other members of the committee and inflicted cutlass wounds on two of the members.
