The recent mass defections going on in the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after its last December National Delegate?s Congress at Koforidua have been described as a propaganda machinery of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to create the impression that the NDC was collapsing.
The General Secretary of NDC, Johnson Asiedu-Nketsia a.k.a. General Mosquito, explaining the motive behind these mass defections, alleged that the ruling government was giving individuals ?5million while unspecified amounts of monies went to groups to defect from NDC.
However, he said some of these members who took such monies and went to the various media houses to announce their defections, later informed him through telephone conversations that they were just fooling the government but were still with the party.
He therefore advised party members to stop creating wrong impressions among the general public saying it would discourage others from working hard for the party. General mosquito was speaking at the inauguration of a 12-member Forum of Elders of the Cape Coast Constituency of the NDC at Nkamfoa, near Cape Coast. The forum comprised of aged members of the party who have retired from active service of the party. It was initiated by the Constituency Executives to advise the executives.
General Mosquito said indications are that NDC has a bright chance to re-capture power in 2008, reminding NDC supporters that it would not be attained on a silver platter and urged them to commit themselves to the development of the party. He said the party would soon open nominations for the presidential slot and made it clear that it would be free and fair to enable all eligible candidates interested in the slot to file their nominations.
