Farmer shoots man for stealing his kontomire

Sunyani, April 19, GNA – The Police in Sunyani have arrested a 66-year old farmer, Kakyire Duku, for allegedly shooting the legs of a 22-year old man at Sodono, near Sunyani, for picking his cocoyam leaves. He has been remanded into police custody for further investigations.

Briefing newsmen, Chief Superintendent Christian Tetteh Yahuno, Municipal Police Commander, said at about 0700 hours on April 15, this year, the farmer, accompanied by his wife and two children, went to his farm at Sodono.

Whilst inspecting his yam mounds, the farmer saw the victim, Mr. Samuel Kyeremeh, picking cocoyam leaves on the farm. The Municipal Commander said the victim took to his heels after initial threats by the suspect to slash his throat with a cutlass, but Duku chased and opened fire on both legs with a single barrelled gun. He said the suspect later got a vehicle and took the victim to the police station to report the case.

Chief Superintendent Yahuno said Kyeremeh was responding to treatment at the regional hospital and that Duku would soon be put before court for an attempted murder.
