Police officer to go on trial soon for murder

Sunyani, April 18, GNA – Police Lance Corporal Ben Azagisnaba, who allegedly shot and killed Mr John Tereku, a 43-year-old mechanical consultant in Sunyani, in May last year will soon stand trial on the charge of murder at a High Court in Sunyani. Mr William Pobee, Principal State Attorney told Ghana News Agency that, the prosecution was waiting for the document, which was being prepared by the police.

Asked why the case had taken so long, Mr Pobi explained that the police were initially instructed to also charge the informant, who led them to the deceased’s room at the Catering Rest House of abetment of murder.

He said this instruction however, contradicted the police principle not to disclose the identity of informants, as that would deter public-spirited individuals from giving vital clues to the police in future.

Lance Corporal Azagisnaba, a member of a team of policemen, who raided the Catering Rest House in Sunyani last April 25, following an informant’s tip-off that the late Tereku was an armed robber and had threatened to strike in the regional capital, allegedly opened fire on the deceased as he slept.
