Kufuor demands electoral reforms…To involve all political parties

The Free Press in a banner headline story, reports that the NPP flag-bearer, Mr. J.A. Kufuor, has urged the National Electoral Commission to involve representatives of all national political parties in the revision of the voters’ register.

Mr. Kufuor is reported to have made the call in a statement in which he said the process of getting rid of ghost names, the dead, as well as getting the names of those who have reached the voting age onto the register, must not be done by the Commission alone.

According to Mr. Kufuor, the NPP believed that transfer of votes in the past also created situations leading to unfair results. It would therefore serve the real purpose for free and fair election in the year 2000 “if all parties’ representatives are invited by the Commission from ward, constituency, district, regional and national levels to be part of the new process”. He said “more importantly, copies of registered voters should be made available early enough for those interested to double-check for the names and addresses of registered voters, in order to dispel any suspicion of ghost names appearing on the list”.
