Electoral Commission needs 26 billion cedis

Daily Graphic The Daily Graphic reports in its lead story that the Electoral Commission has submitted a budget of 26 billion cedis to the government for approval to enable the Commission to embark upon a nation-wide issuance of photo identity cards. Additionally, the money is to cater for the re-opening of the voters’ register sometime this year. Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, chairman of the Commission who is said to have made this known, was throwing light on efforts the Commission was making towards re-opening the voters’ register and the bid to provide photo identity cards for all eligible voters.

The Graphic says the Commission, with the support of the government. Has indicated its readiness to issue all qualified voters with photo identity cards to facilitate the conduct of free and fair elections to consolidate Ghana’s democratic system.

However, says the paper, the Commission has been hampered in the attainment of this objective due to lack of adequate resources.
