Man who attempted to behead wife granted bail

Mamponteng (Ash), April 13, GNA – A 37-year-old man who allegedly attempted to behead his wife for threatening to divorce him, was on Wednesday granted bail in the sum of 50 million cedis with a surety to justify when he appeared before the Mamponteng magistrate court.

Yaw Brehene, who pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, will re-appear on April 27.

Police Inspector Ben Apuriyure told the court, presided over by Mr. Uuter P. Dery that for sometime now the relationship between Brehene and his wife, Helena Asantewaa had been strained due to a misunderstanding that arose between them in the early part of last year.

He said consequently, Asantewaa, 28, who has four children with Brehene, threatened to divorce him and subsequently moved to her parents’ house at Ntonso.

The prosecution said the accused who did not take kindly to the complainant’s decision, on two occasions threatened to behead her if she dared carry on with the divorce.

Inspector Apuriyure said last Sunday at about 0200 hours, Brehene quietly sneaked into the room where Asantewaa was sleeping and allegedly inflicted a deep cutlass wounds on her throat with the intention of beheading her.

The court heard that as a struggle ensued between the two, some tenants who heard strange noises emanating from the complainant’s room went to her rescue and upon seeing her condition rushed her to the hospital whilst Brehene bolted and went into hiding but was arrested the same day.

In granting bail, the court said it took into consideration the fact that the accused had seriously fallen sick whiles in custody and therefore needed treatment at the hospital under the supervision of the police.
