VEEP announces plans to facilitate Nkonya/Alavanyo peace efforts

Hohoe, March 11, GNA -Vice President Aliu Mahama at the weekend announced plans by the government to rehabilitate the Gbi-Wegbe-Alavanyo/Nkonya road to open the place for development and facilitate the peace process among feuding parties.

The people of Nkonya and Alavanyo have initiated series of efforts to “smoke the peace pipe” after a protracted conflict that have claimed a number of lives and destruction of property. Vice President Alhaji Mahama unveiled the ambitious project at Hohoe in the Volta Region when he addressed a durbar of chiefs and people of the Gbi Traditional Area as part of his official tour of the region. He asked the people to embrace the national drive towards peace unity and reconciliation efforts by the Kufuor administration to promote development.

As part of his tour, Vice President Mahama would interact with the Wheta Traditional Council and meet with the Agbogbomefia of Ho Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV.

He said government was committed to the rehabilitation of the Hohoe township roads adding, “politics is about development”. Vice President Alhaji Mahama asked people in the region to see themselves as part of the country and access all the development package and intervention of the government and not entrust their destiny into the hands of selfish politicians.

Togbega Gabusu IV, Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area lauded the introduction of the capitation grant, saying, “it has come as a great relief to most people”.

“Already records available indicate that there has been a remarkable improvement in school enrolment,” he said. Togbega Gabusu however, complained about the fallen standards of education in the Hohoe district and appealed to government to upgrade the Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Secondary School into a model school to help reverse the trend. He also asked the government to help develop the tourism potential of the area to complement efforts being made by the Hohoe District Assembly to generate more revenue. 11 March 06
