Saltpond, March 10, GNA – The District Chief Executive for Mfantseman, Mr Robert Quainoo-Arthur, has appealed to chiefs to support the District Assembly in the efforts to attract projects to the area. He observed that many areas were chasing “Limited national cake,” adding that it was those who could attract projects and businesses that had them.
The DCE was speaking at a meeting with some chiefs and Assembly Members of Saltpond on Thursday, to explain the causes of the irregular supply of water to the town and the rampant power outages. Mr Quainoo-Arthur said he had been in constant touch with the authorities of the Ghana Water Company and the Electricity Company of Ghana to find solutions to the problems.
He said the Assembly spent 5,500 Euros for a water booster pump to improve supply to some parts of Saltpond and told the Chiefs that efforts were being made by the government to upgrade the water head-works at Agona Kwanyako, Baifikrom and Brimsu to improve supply to parts of the Central Region.
The DCE attributed part of the problem to the rampant power outage, which made the pumping of water impossible and appealed to the ECG to replace its old equipment and cables.
Nana Gyan Ankwanda VI, Chief of Saltpond Bakado, appealed to the Water Company for tanker services to alleviate the suffering of the people who had to travel long distances in search of water when the pipes were not flowing and gave the assurance that the people would pay for the services. Nana Edu Kwakye VII, Chief of Saltpond Okokodo, appealed to the utility companies to inform the people when they were going to disrupt their services. Okese Essandoh VIII, Omanhene of the Nkusukum Traditional Area, urged the government to rehabilitate Saltpond roads before the Ghana’s Golden jubilee Independence next year since tourists would visit the town, which was the birthplace of modern politics in Ghana. Mr Asamoah Adjei Kusi, Presiding Member of the Assembly called for an improvement in the relations between the Assembly and Chiefs, saying they should see themselves as partners in development. 10 March 06
