Committee set up to review petition against CJ

Accra, March 9, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor has set up a Committee to review a petition he has received from an Accra-based private legal practitioner against Chief Justice George Kingsley Acquah, his Press Secretary, told a Castle briefing on Thursday.

Mr Kwabena Agyepong would, however, not disclose the names of the members of the Committee or the contents of the petition. The President has taken the appropriate steps in conformity with the mandatory provisions of the Constitution on how to deal with such a sensitive matter, he said.

He was of the hope that the media would be more circumspect, ensure high sense of professionalism and avoid misleading headlines on the issue.

“As and when desirable we would come out with a statement “, Mr Agyepong said.

The Press Secretary conveyed the President’s congratulation to Ghanaian women on the occasion of the World Women’s Day, which was marked on Wednesday for their hard work and the role that have played since the country’s independence.

President Kufuor would continue to empower women to take up key positions and to encourage their participation in decision-making so that they would become a catalyst for national development. Meanwhile, President Kufuor has renewed Ghana’s commitment to the Commonwealth’s shared values of tolerance, respect and equality. A message from him to mark this year’s Commonwealth Day, which, falls on Monday, March 13, reaffirmed the country’s determination to also uphold the fundamental principles of democracy, human rights, the rule of law and sustainable development.

It noted that membership of the Commonwealth “enhances our reputation around the world as it brings a collective dimension to our global interests.

“We in Ghana are much stronger knowing that our one voice has the support of 52 other nations. We know the Commonwealth is a trusted partner and welcome its style of global diplomacy, which uses the power of consensus to make multilateralism work.

“Our solidarity is our strength, our shared values, conventions and institutions provide the platform to build peace and deliver prosperity to all our people.” 09 March 06
