Minister says parents should not shirk responsibility

Guo (UW), Jan 31, GNA – Mr Ambrose Dery, the Upper West Regional Minister, has cautioned parents against using the introduction of the Capitation Grant and the supply of free textbooks as basis to abdicate their duties and responsibilities to their children.

He said the government placed a lot of emphasis on human resource development as one of its cardinal development policies during its second term in office with the provision of quality basic education as the foundation stone, hence the need for the provision of opportunities for all children to get formal education.

Mr Dery said this when handed over a classroom block rehabilitated by the Lawra District Assembly at a total cost of 180 million cedis to the Guo community in the Nandom Traditional Area. The ceremony formed part of his tour of the district during which he inspected projects that were being undertaken by the assembly with the support of some of its collaborative agencies.

These projects, costing seven billion cedis, include classroom blocks, markets, sanitary facilities, bungalows and junior staff quarters, day care centres and a mango plantation. During brief interactions with the people of beneficiary communities, Mr Dery urged them to send their children to school if not, the massive resources that were being injected into the provision of educational facilities would be wasted.

He urged directors of education, teachers and parents to cooperate with the government to enable these policies to succeed. 31 Jan 06
