Taxi kills two on pavements in Ho

Ho, Jan 30, GNA – Two persons died and three injured, when a Fiat Tippo taxicab with registration number GW2470S run into a group of banana sellers on the pavement along the street near the Ho Central Market on Thursday.

The dead persons were Torvor Kosinonu, 15, a JSS three student of Ho Bankoe Roman Catholic Central School and Mavis Dzitor, 45, also of Ho Bankoe.

The injured included Doris Kpekpo, 42, Joseph Kadzi, 58, and Kodzo Philip, 22.

According to Mr Johnson Ganyoh, Volta Regional MTTU Commander, the accident occurred only a day after he had personally warned the hawkers in the area about the dangers of selling there. Mr Ganyoh said the driver during interrogation told the Police that the accident occurred as a result of a brake failure, which made him lose control of the car.

He said the Police was still investigating the circumstances of the accident and would put the driver before court, if found to have contravened traffic regulations.

He complained about the rate at which market women around the area were enthusiastically introducing “Makola tactics” into the system, by occupying the pavements and pedestrian walkways with their wares on market days especially.

Mr Ganyoh said the Police had embarked on an exercise to clear hawkers from selling and displaying their goods along the wings of the street around the market.

” This is to stop the practice before it becomes accepted as normal”, he said, adding that, it was not proper for municipal assembly levy collectors to collect tolls from hawkers selling at wrong places.
