A Chemist and a driver fined 6.5 million cedis for traffic offences

Cape Coast, Jan. 27, GNA – A Cape Coast Circuit court presided over by Mr Mustapha Logoh, on Friday fined two drivers 6.5 million cedis for traffic offences.

Joseph Kwame Baah, a taxi driver plying Kotokuraba and Abura, both suburbs of Cape Coast pleaded guilty to careless driving and causing harm, while Abraham Kobina Turkson, a Chemist with the Coca Cola Company pleaded guilty to over-speeding.

Baah was fined six million cedis or in default serve 30 months imprisonment in hard labour, while Turkson was fined 500,000 cedis or in default serve 50 days in prison.

Police Chief Inspector Oheneba Amoako Boateng told the court that about two years ago, Baah knocked down and injured Mr Kweku Mensah 40, who was crossing the road at Abura.

He said the victim was rushed to the Central Regional Hospital but was transferred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for further treatment, but died on admission.

Police Chief Inspector Boateng said a Police Highway Patrol team arrested Turkson, on the morning of last Friday on the Cape Coast-Takoradi road driving a Toyota Corolla at 68 kilometres per hour instead of 50 kilometres and was arrested. He said the two accused persons were arrested and after investigations charged with the offences. 27 Jan.06
