Make payment of Vehicle Income Tax less cumbersome

Mankessim (C/R), Jan 26, GNA – An executive member of the GPRTU in Mankessim has suggested to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to begin issuing Vehicle Income Tax (VIT) to commercial drivers at least three days before the end of the quarter to avoid the current situation where drivers always had to rush to renew their tax at the beginning of a new quarter.

Mr Kwesi Baffoe, an executive member of the Mankessim Number Three Branch of the GPRTU, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the change would also address the break in the validity of the tax, which normally occurred in between the old and new quarter, leading to confrontations between them and the police.

Presently, VIT is issued to commercial drivers at the beginning of a new quarter.

Mr Baffoe called on the IRS to publicly come out of a number of days that could be considered a grace period after the close of the quarter, after which drivers without a valid tax could be arrested. He held that the Police were taking undue advantage of difficulties the drivers encountered as a result of the rush and congestion while paying the tax at the beginning of a new quarter to exploit drivers, who are unable to renew their tax on the start of the quarter. Mr Baffoe appealed to the IRS to send its officials to the lorry stations to collect the tax and issue the stickers to the drivers to facilitate the process.
