GMM changes venue for worship of Eid-Ul-Adha

Kumasi, Jan 11, GNA – Members of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Muslim Mission (GMM) held their Eid-Ul-Adha, feast of sacrifice, prayers at the Islamic Secondary School at Bohyen in Kumasi on Monday for the first time after 21 years of litigation over ownership of the school.

The members could not worship there due to a legal battle between the Mission and a section of the leadership of the Islamic Mission Secretariat.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview after the prayers, Alhaji Ibrahim Baryeh, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the GMM, said the legal battle was not between members of the GMM and one person who wanted to claim ownership of the school that they all started some years back.

Alhaji Baryeh said their return to the school compound was an indication that the compound and the school belong to the GMM following the court’s ruling.

He said the GMM had started the rehabilitation of the school, the mosque and is building a fence wall and that a surveyor has been engaged to demarcate the school land.

”Anybody found to have encroached upon part of the school land will not be spared.”

He called on Islamic scholars to interpret the Koran properly to the well being of society and not to interpret it to meet their whims and caprices.

“Islamic scholars should preach peace, unity for development and progress and not practices and interpretations that will result in intimidation, violence and indiscipline in the society”, he said.
