Supervise, monitor progress of STME clinic participants

Wa, Jan 9, GNA – Mr Ambrose Dery, Upper West Regional Minister on Saturday appealed to organizers of Science Technology and Mathematics Education (STME) clinics to continuously supervise and monitor the performance and progress of participating students for them to harness their God-given talents to the full. He said it was not fair for the organizers to abandon students who exhibit good projects during the annual clinics to their fate when they were capable of guiding them to become great scientists.

Mr Dery made this appeal at the close of the Wa Zone One STME workshop for 165 students selected from Wa Municipal, Wa East and Wa West districts in the Upper West Region. He expressed satisfaction that out of the number only 42 of them were boys, but was, however, disappointed that the girls won only three of the 12 awards presented to the participants. Mr Dery said science and technology was the bedrock of industrial development and commended the district assemblies and education directorates for such programmes, which he indicated would spur the students on to become serious in science subjects in school.

The Regional Minister said the news that three of the participants of the clinics were in the Medical School should serve as a motivation to whip up their enthusiasm in science. “I will be very proud if one day I meet any of you here who will introduce himself or herself as a scientist who benefited from the STME clinics in the Region.” Mrs Scholastica Gyiel, Municipal Director of Education, said the STME clinics had become a regular feature aimed at enhancing the study of science technology and mathematics, especially by girls and commended the district assemblies for their support.
