Alavanyo and Nkonya youths commended for promoting peace

Ho, Dec. 9, GNA- Bishop Francis Lodonu, Bishop of Ho Catholic Diocese on Monday expressed happiness about the commitment of the youth of Alavanyo and Nkonya towards peaceful co-existence. He said jointly organised events such as, freedom and peace marches, church services, football matches and the level of tolerance among the two ethnic groups, which had engaged in a protracted conflict, was commendable since it is erasing the fear and tension that characterized their relationship with each other previously. Bishop Lodonu was speaking at a three-day sensitisation workshop for the youth from both sides in Ho. The Mediation Committee set up by the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, organized the workshop, which also attracted chiefs and opinion leaders.

Bishop Lodonu said with the current level of commitment where “every youth is touched by the peace deal”, indicated that there was hope for the future despite some few problems that were likely to occur. Right Reverend Dr. Livingstone Komla Buama, Moderator of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church noted that the road to peace was very slippery thus the need to thread with caution, patience and determination. Rt. Rev. Dr Buama who is the Chairman of the Mediation Committee said though violence was powerful and destructive, negotiation was more powerful and constructive and therefore advised the youth to choose negotiations over violent confrontations in resolving issues.
