Cashew farmers prepare to fight bush fires

Kranka (B/A) Jan. 3, GNA – Cashew Farmers at Kranka in Nkoranza District are preparing fire belts around their farms to protect the trees against bushfires.

Mr. Mathew Duako-Nsoah, a spokesman of the group told Ghana News Agency there were more than 100 cashew farmers in the area and a major challenge facing them was lack of financial support.

He called on the government to create a buying agency for the commodity as applied to cocoa, shea butter and coffee to ensure a stable price for the produce.

The farmer appealed to teachers in the area to help check against the harvesting of the fruits by children.

Mr. Matthias Kwasi Yeboah, another farmer suggested the formation of an association of cashew farmers in the area, which would help them to access financial support from the banking institutions. He advised the people to be very careful in handling fire during the harmattan season called on fire volunteers to be on the alert at all times.
