100 child neglect cases recorded in Agona District

Agona Swedru, Dec 5, GNA – The Agona District Director of the Department of Social Welfare, Mrs Veronica Agusika Donkor, has expressed concern about child neglect cases by fathers in the area She said the Department had recorded 100 of such cases as at end of November, this year.

Mrs Donkor made this known when he presented school uniforms and bags, shoes, and medicine worth 2 million cedis to 19 needy orphans at Dwenho, a suburb of Agona Swedru.

A total of 100 needy orphans especially school children have been registered for a similar package in other suburbs of Agona Swedru. Mrs Donkor stated some of the fathers had been put before a family court and other cases resolved by the Department. She said the Department had intensified its educational campaign for mothers whose children had been neglected by their husbands so that they could be brought to book.

Mrs Donkor expressed concern about the high rate of child neglect cases in the District and said most of the children roaming the streets were victims of the practice.

The District Director pointed out that if such husbands were not checked, the future of their children would hang in the balance and said, “They can become armed robbers and give the society many problems”. She appealed to the government to release funds early for the support of vulnerable children. 05 Dec 05
