Ex-convict goes back to jail for impersonation

Tarkwa, (W/R) Nov.24, GNA- A Tarkwa Cicuit Court, presided over by Mr. John Ajet-Nasam on Thursday sentenced an ex-convict, Charles Oppon Assaah to three years imprisonment in hard labour for attempted fraud, impersonation and unlawful entry.

Giving the facts, Chief Inspector Alex Asamoah of the Tarkwa Police said Nana Kwabena Angu II, who is the complainant in the case is the chief of Tarkwa whereas the accused is a mill operator who works with Wexford Mining Company Limited at Akyempim and lives at Aboso, near Tarkwa.

Chief Inspector Asamoah said on June 14, this year, the accused posed himself as a student of Enchi Training College and also the son of one Major Amponsah (Rtd) and called the chief on his phone to tell him that he the accused’s father has asked him to collect an amount of two million cedis from the chief to enable him, the accused purchase some textbooks for school.

The chief became convinced and quickly organised the money and asked the accused to come to his house for it. The prosecutor added that the accused went to the chief’s house and once again introduced himself as the son of Major Amponsah who was there to collect the money from Nana Angu II upon the request of his father.

Chief Inspector Asamoah said in the process of giving the money to the accused, one of the chief’s elders hinted him that the accused was a fraudster and an ex-convict who came out of prison not long ago. The prosecutor said when the accused heard this, he bolted but the police managed to arrest him at his hide out.
