Community Based Anti-Violence Team inaugurated

Nyinawusu (Ash), Nov. 23, GNA – An 11-member Community Based Anti-Violence Team to help eliminate violence against women within Nkrumah community in the Atwima-Mponua district of Ashanti was launched at Nyinawusu on Tuesday.

The team under the Chairmanship of Mr Kwame Aning, has Mr Enin Asenso as Secretary, Madam Grace Opoku as Vice-chairperson, Miss Yaa Asantewaah as Treasurer and Mr Augustine Opoku as Porter. Other members are, Pastor Alex Boateng, Mr Kwadwo Antwi, Mr Issaka Kyere, Madam Akua Dankwa, Madam Fatimata Abu, and Madam Afua Nsiwaah. Launching the team, Mrs Elizabeth Adubofour, Co-ordinator of the project initiated by the Centre for the Development of People (CEDEP), said it was established at Kwanfinfin on a pilot basis in 2002 and had been replicated in three other communities within the district after its successful implementation.

The three other beneficiary communities are, Nyinawusu, Serebuoso and Nkrumah.

Mrs Adubofour said the team would sensitise the communities on the dangers of violence against women and children and ensure reported cases were solved.

She said the project was being implemented by CEDEP in conjunction with the Gender Studies and Human Rights Documentation Centre, and appealed to the team to work hard to resolve all forms of violence against women and children in their communities to help improve upon their status and standards of living.

Mr Joseph Hamlet Osei, Presiding Member of the Atwima-Mponua District Assembly, expressed concern about the increasing spate of violence against women and children through defilement, sexual harassment and forced labour in the country.

He said the constitution, gave protection to women and children therefore, there was the need for people to respect the rights of women and children.

Mr Osei appealed to the team to work assiduously to resolve all anti-violent cases against women and children in the communities to ensure peace and development. 23 Nov.05
